A workable plan for the whole garden before a single slab is lifted — layout, levels, materials and planting.
Indian sandstone, porcelain and riven paving laid on a full mortar bed with proper falls and drainage.
Paths, steps and paved seating areas that tie the whole garden together and stay level year after year.
Block paved and flagged driveways built on a compacted sub-base with permeable drainage where it is needed.
A year-round green lawn on a properly drained base — no mowing, no mud, no bare winter patches.
New lawns laid on prepared, levelled and fed topsoil so they knit in instead of shrinking back.
Regular or one-off tidy-ups — grass cuts, hedges, borders, pruning and full garden clearances.
Replacement fencing, gates and timber or composite decking, set on posts that stay standing.
Professional pressure washing for patios, driveways, block paving, paths and garden walls.
Full garden landscaping is what we do most of. Levels are set out, ground is dug and compacted, retaining walls and steps are built, paving is laid and edged, then turf, planting and finishing touches go in — all handled by the same team from first dig to final brush-down.
Most Alwoodley gardens sit on a slope, so terracing, retaining walls and steps are usually part of the job rather than an extra. We work out the levels before anything is dug so drainage runs away from the house and every finished surface sits where it should.
Design and build under one roof means the plan is drawn by the people who will actually lay it. We look at how you use the garden, where the sun falls through the day, what the ground is doing underneath, and where the awkward corners are — then set out a layout that works in practice, not just on paper.
You get a clear plan of the layout, the materials and the running order of the work, with a written price against it before anything starts.
A patio is only as good as what is underneath it. We dig out to a proper depth, lay and compact a stone sub-base, then bed every slab on a full mortar bed rather than the five-blob method that leaves slabs rocking and hollow within a couple of winters.
Falls are set away from the house and below damp-course level, joints are pointed with a proper jointing compound, and the finished surface is left swept and washed down.
Paving is the part of a garden that gets walked on every day, so it has to be laid to last. Whether it is a path down the side of the house, a set of steps between levels or a paved area under a seating spot, the build-up underneath is the same as a patio — dug out, sub-based, compacted and bedded properly.
We can match new paving into existing stone, cut around drains and inspection covers, and set recessed covers so the pattern runs through uninterrupted.
Driveways take the weight of a car every day, so the sub-base does the real work. We excavate to depth, lay and whacker a compacted MOT sub-base, set the edge restraints in concrete, then lay the blocks or flags, compact and kiln-dry sand the joints.
Since 2008, a new or replacement front driveway over five square metres needs either a permeable surface or drainage to a soakaway or border to stay within permitted development. We build to that as standard so you are not left with a planning problem.
Artificial grass is a genuinely good answer for shaded Leeds gardens where real turf never establishes, for families who want the lawn usable in February, and for anyone tired of mowing. Done properly it lasts years; done badly it ripples, sinks and shows every seam.
We dig out the old lawn, lay a compacted stone base with a sharp sand blinding, fit a weed membrane, then cut, join and pin the grass so seams are invisible and the pile all runs the same way.
A new lawn lives or dies on the ground under it. We strip out the old surface, break up compacted subsoil, bring in and level fresh topsoil, then lay the turf tight with staggered joints and roll it in.
You get watering and first-cut instructions on the day, which is the part most people are never told — a new lawn needs a soaking for the first fortnight, not a light sprinkle.
Not every job is a full rebuild. A lot of what we do week to week is keeping gardens on top of themselves — grass cuts, hedges cut square, borders weeded and mulched, shrubs pruned back at the right time of year, and everything taken away rather than bagged and left.
We handle both regular visits and one-off clearances, including overgrown gardens, end-of-tenancy tidy-ups and properties being put on the market.
Storm-damaged fences are one of the most common calls we get. Panels are the easy part — the posts are what fails, so we concrete new posts in properly rather than patching a leaning line and hoping.
Decking is built on a treated, ventilated frame with the right joist spacing so boards do not bounce, and finished with a fixing pattern that stays tight through wet Yorkshire winters.
Plenty of patios and driveways do not need replacing at all — they need the algae, moss and ingrained dirt taking off and the joints re-sanding. The colour underneath is usually still there.
We pressure wash patios, block paved driveways, paths, steps and house or garden walls, then re-sand block paving joints so weeds and moss take much longer to come back.
Service questions
How we handle slopes, waste, matching stone and commercial jobs.
Yes — design and build are the same team here, which is the main reason the finished garden matches the plan. The person who sets out the levels is the person who lays the paving.
Most of north Leeds slopes, so terracing is normal for us. Retaining walls, steps and split levels are part of the build rather than an extra bolted on afterwards, and we work the levels out before anything is dug so surface water runs away from the house.
Yes. Spoil from excavation, old slabs, turf, hedge cuttings and general garden waste all go with us. Nothing is bagged up and left in a corner for you to deal with.
We do. Alongside domestic gardens we take on commercial grounds work, communal areas and pressure washing contracts. All jobs considered — call and tell us what you need.
Usually, yes. We can cut in around existing paving, match riven sandstone reasonably closely, and blend levels so the join does not read as a repair. If a match is not going to look right we will tell you before you commit to it.
