Why Anderscapes

A landscaper who turns up, prices honestly and finishes the job

Anderscapes has been landscaping gardens across Leeds for around forty years. It is a hands-on outfit — Andy quotes the work, and the same team that sets out the levels is the team that lays the paving and rakes out the topsoil at the end.

  • Proper build-ups. Slabs bedded on a full mortar bed, driveways on a compacted sub-base with concrete edge restraints.
  • Levels worked out first. Falls run away from the house and below damp-course level, so water goes where it should.
  • Written prices. Materials named on the quote, so you know exactly what is being laid.
  • Waste taken away. Spoil, old slabs, turf and cuttings all leave with us.

Where we work

Alwoodley, LS17 and across north Leeds

Alwoodley sits at the northern edge of Leeds, and it is the area we know best — large mature gardens, sloping plots and a lot of stone-fronted properties where paving has to be matched rather than guessed at.

We cover the whole of LS17 along with Adel, Cookridge, Bramhope, Roundhay, Chapel Allerton, Meanwood, Horsforth and out towards Wetherby, Otley and Wharfedale.

Common questions

Landscaping in Alwoodley — your questions answered

Costs, timescales, materials and the bits of the job most people are never told about.

Do you cover Alwoodley and the rest of LS17?

Yes. Alwoodley is one of our core areas and we work right across LS17 — Moortown, Shadwell, Wigton Moor, Slaid Hill, Alwoodley Gates, Harewood and Bardsey — along with the neighbouring north Leeds districts of Adel, Cookridge, Bramhope, Roundhay, Chapel Allerton and Meanwood. We cover a wider stretch of Leeds and West Yorkshire beyond that, so it is always worth asking.

How much does a new patio cost in Alwoodley?

It depends on four things: the size of the area, the paving you choose, how much digging and level change is involved, and how easy it is to get materials and spoil in and out. A small flat rear terrace in porcelain is a very different job to a terraced sandstone patio with retaining walls on a sloping garden.

Rather than quote a figure that turns out to be wrong, we come and look, measure up, and give you a written price with the materials named on it. That visit and quote are free.

Do you charge for a quote?

No. Quotes are free and come with no obligation. Call or message us with a rough idea of what you want doing, we will arrange a time to come and look, and you will get a written price covering the work and the materials.

How long does a garden makeover usually take?

A patio or a new lawn on its own is often a few days. A full garden landscaping project with retaining walls, paving, turf and planting is usually a couple of weeks, sometimes longer if there is a lot of excavation or the weather turns.

Whatever the job, you get a realistic start date and a running order before we begin, and we tell you straight away if anything is going to shift.

Are you insured?

Yes — Anderscapes is fully insured, and we are happy to show you the cover before work starts. If you would like to see the certificate, just ask when we come out to quote.

What paving do you use for patios and driveways?

For patios, Indian sandstone and porcelain are the two most popular choices in Alwoodley. Sandstone gives a warm, natural, riven finish that suits older stone properties; porcelain is flatter, more uniform, and far easier to keep clean because it does not take on algae the way natural stone can.

For driveways we mostly lay block paving or heavy-duty flags on a compacted sub-base with concrete edge restraints. We will bring samples out and talk through what suits the property and the budget.

Will artificial grass work in a shaded garden?

It works particularly well there. Shaded north-facing gardens and gardens under mature trees are exactly where real turf struggles, thins out and turns to mud over winter. Artificial grass gives you a usable green lawn all year, provided the base underneath is dug out, compacted and drained properly — which is the part that separates a lawn that lasts from one that ripples and sinks.

Do I need planning permission for a new driveway?

Usually not, but there is a rule worth knowing. Since 2008, laying a new or replacement driveway of more than five square metres at the front of a house needs planning permission unless the surface is permeable, or the water drains to a soakaway, border or lawn rather than straight onto the road.

We build front driveways to that standard as a matter of course, so you are not left with a retrospective planning problem. If a dropped kerb is needed as well, that is a separate application to Leeds City Council and we will point you to it.

Do you do garden maintenance as well as landscaping?

Yes. As well as full landscaping projects we take on grass cutting, hedge cutting, border work, seasonal pruning and one-off garden clearances — including overgrown gardens and end-of-tenancy tidy-ups. Residential and commercial work, and all jobs considered.
